About us

Run by volunteer trustees and working in Sri Lanka since 2004.

Our story

AITS is a UK registered charity working in Sri Lanka to support orphans and widows, particularly families displaced by the civil conflict and the tsunami who still live as refugees in the crippling hardship of poverty. Our focus is long-term development for the most vulnerable. Let us thank Allah for what He has given us, and share His favours by giving a small portion of our wealth to those in need. In doing so we multiply our own rewards and help people in poverty ease their daily hunger and thirst.

Our vision

Our vision is that everyone should have a decent place to live, good health, an education and a livelihood. We aim to root out extreme poverty in the lives of the most vulnerable, empowering them to build a future free from dependence on aid and from injustice. We believe this can become reality if we all join hands in following the teaching of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in helping the poor and needy.

Our mission

Our mission is to tackle poverty and bring a sense of normality back to the lives of orphans, widows and families affected by natural disasters and chronic poverty.

Who we are

AITS is a nonprofit humanitarian relief organisation based in the UK and registered with the Charity Commission. We provide humanitarian help in times of crisis and in everyday need to orphans, widows and the destitute, irrespective of race, religion or culture. In Sri Lanka we work to remove the causes of poverty and to bring dignity and freedom to all, regardless of faith or nationality.

Our trustees are volunteers. They form the governing body and are legally responsible for everything the charity does under the Charities Act. Our trustees and team give their skills and expertise in the service of others, and include accountants, bankers, engineers, business people, doctors and academics.

We are dedicated to supporting the most vulnerable people, regardless of race, ethnicity or religion.

Message from the Chairman

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah

It is a great pleasure to write this message for the Al-Ihsan Trust website. The Trust is still young, yet it has already achieved a tremendous amount of charity work in Sri Lanka.

On this website you will find the projects we have delivered since January 2013. None of them would have been possible without the help of the Almighty, your prayers and your generous donations. We are thankful to Allah (swt), and then to our partners, donors, supporters and volunteers, who have joined us in wiping away the tears of orphans and bringing smiles to widows.

We have provided more than 2,000 food hampers to the needy during Ramadan, and during Hajj we regularly help to sacrifice and distribute Qurbani meat, mainly to widows and orphanages.

With the help of our partners and donor organisations we have also given wheelchairs to disabled people in hospitals, in care homes and in their own homes.

With the assistance of Age Helping, we have held several eye camps offering free glasses and cataract operations to those in need.

Al-Ihsan Trust remains devoted to serving people in need, whatever their race, colour or faith. We believe everyone shares a fundamental right to a life of dignity, free from poverty, exploitation and oppression. We look forward to working with our partners and donors for many more years of service, and we thank you for all your support so far.

Message from the Director of Projects

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah

Al-Ihsan Trust Sri Lanka has grown significantly since it was established in January 2013, and, Alhamdulillah, every year our work for orphans and the needy has moved forward. We ask Allah to accept the generosity of our donors. May their Sadaqah be a means of forgiveness, may it raise their rank, and may it be a shade for them on the Day of Judgement.

With your generous support, our projects reach thousands of vulnerable people and communities every year. We extend our gratitude to all our donors, implementing partners, team members and well-wishers for their continued support.

When we work together there is no limit to what we can achieve in serving humanity. Together we can bring a smile to the face of an orphan, a widow or a family in need.

We continue to deliver our core programmes: quality education, wheelchairs, water hand pumps and wells, orphan sponsorship and care for disabled children. We aim to keep building on this work and to create lasting solutions that help poor communities in Sri Lanka lift themselves out of poverty.

We are determined to keep supporting people in need, and to develop projects that end illiteracy and give children, women and families affected by poverty a brighter future.
